Two new areas of Cornwall reporting coronavirus clusters as positive tests spike

It comes as the numbers of positive tests in Cornwall continue to increase.

More coronavirus infection clusters have appeared in Cornwall, according to the Government’s coronavirus dashboard.

The map, which splits the country into areas of around 7,500 population size shows the amount of confirmed positive tests for the disease, with a “cluster” meaning more than two infections in one area.

In the latest update for the week September 11 to September 17, it reports the locations of 42 of the 72 positive tests in Cornwall for that week, with five areas showing spikes in cases.

Kingsand, Antony and Maryfield, in South East Cornwall, shows 28 positive tests for that time period, representing 38% of Cornwall’s coronavirus cases, with an increase of 4 on the previous cluster report.

Two new clusters have appeared in the Camborne and Redruth area, believed to be linked to the confirmed outbreak at the Tulip factory in Pool, report eight new cases, with 5 in Pool & Illogan Highway and 3 in Camborne East in addition to 3 positive tests in Redruth North.

The reported cases are likely to be in addition to a positive test that has been reported at a Camborne school, leading to Year 8 at Camborne Science and International Academy sent home to self-isolate with remote teaching.

A cluster in Launceston is still reporting 3 cases.

The increasing numbers in Cornwall form part of a national wider trend of a spike in coronavirus infections- with 4,368 positive cases reported yesterday (September 21) with 37 of those in Cornwall, bringing the county’s total since the pandemic began to 1,158 positive tests. It represents one of the largest numbers of positive tests in a single day in Cornwall.

However, part of Devon has recorded the joint-lowest weekly coronavirus case rate in England as the county and Plymouth appeared to be bucking the national trend.

It comes as the coronavirus alert level for the country has been increased by the Government to 4 (out of 5), meaning “transmission is high or rising exponentially” and that social distancing continues. The previous level, 3, meant that “virus is in general circulation” and there would be a gradual easing of restrictions.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson will give an address to the nation tonight regarding the latest coronavirus measures.

The Prime Minister, Boris Johnson will tonight address the nation after attending a COBRA meeting, where he is expected to outline changes to the restrictions in place on people’s daily lives. One of those changes- a requirement on pubs to close at 10 pm at night, has already been announced. Thea address is expected to take place at 8 pm.

In a joint statement, Professor Chris Whitty, Chief Medical Officer, and Sir Patrick Vallance, Chief Scientific Officer, warned that without action, cases could skyrocket to as many as 50,000 in the coming months. They said: “After a period of lower COVID cases and deaths, the number of cases are now rising rapidly and probably exponentially in significant parts of all four nations.

"If we are to avoid significant excess deaths and exceptional pressure in the NHS and other health services over the autumn and winter everyone has to follow the social distancing guidance, wear face coverings correctly and wash their hands regularly.

"We know this will be concerning news for many people; please follow the rules, look after each other and together we will get through this."

The Government's top scientists delivered an address to the nation on Monday, where they warned that cases were doubling each week - potentially reaching 50,000 a day by mid-October if no action is taken.

Chief Scientific Adviser Sir Patrick Vallance said the UK could see 200 or more deaths per day by mid-November if the current rate of infection continues.

And he warned that the "vast majority of the population remain susceptible" to catching the virus.
