Gas Works - Hayle

Circa 1834 the Copperhouse foundry built a small gasworks to light their foundry and the surrounding area.In 1869 the Company became bankrupt and the Foundry closed, but the Receiver continued to supply gas. The gasworks was purchased by Hosken & Sons, Millers in 1875.
In 1889 the Copperhouse gasworks was closed and the supply taken over by the new works of the Hayle Gas Co.
Hayle Harbour Reports
A gas works was in operation on East Quay from 1888. The historical maps indicate that it was constructed in 2 phases with the western half shown on the 1908 1:2,500 map and both the western and eastern halves shown on the 1936 map. The gas holders were demolished by 1979 but the buildings remain
The area between Carnsew Road and the railway viaduct was used as a gas works from 1843 to 1888. Various buildings and a gas holder shown on the 1879 1:2,500 map. Various buildings still shown on the 1964 1:2,500 map but were apparently completely demolished by 1976.

In 1889 a site was conveyed to the newly-formed Hayle Gas Co.
Ltd. by Harvey & Co. A railway siding bisected the land into two
plots. In 1901 a small plot at the northwest corner of the works was
leased to build a coal shed from Messrs Harvey for 60 years from 1893.
on 30th June 1943 a small, separate third plot was acquired. On the land
covered by the 4/18ths lease of the freehold, ending Michaelmas 1988.
On this were built purifiers. Latterly there were four settings of six
stop- enders. Gas production ceased 4th June 1953. |

In 1830 a Gasworks was built to supply the Harvey & Company
factory and foundry. In 1843 supply of gas extended to nearby streets.
The gasworks were closed after the New Gas Company began operations in
1889. Vested in the South-Western Gas Board from the Hayle Gas Company,

The Company was formed in 1830. The original plant was made by
Harvey's, Hayle Foundry. In 1900 the works were reconstructed by Willey
of Exeter. The company traded as the Penzance Gas Co. Ltd. Gas
Production ceased in 1970, the site was retained as a gasholder station. |
