Debenhams and other retailers have announced plans for new stores in Hayle, with a promise of hundreds of new jobs in West Cornwall.

It is part of a £35 million proposal that is being promoted by Cranford Developments, to be built next to the existing West Cornwall Shopping Park.

Transport and environmental improvements are also proposed, including an enhanced County Wildlife Site and improvements to the A30.

Before the plans are submitted to Cornwall Council, Cranford is consulting local residents. This week, over 4,000 leaflets will be delivered to homes in the area and a website is being launched for people to give their feedback online – www.hayleshoppingpark.co.uk.

They will also be holding an exhibition between 10am – 4pm on Saturday 14th September at the Passmore Edwards Institute, Hayle Village Hall, 13-15 Hayle Terrace, Hayle, TR27 4BU for local residents and businesses to drop in, meet the team and discuss the proposals.

Bill Oakley, Chairman of Cranford Developments, who developed the West Cornwall Shopping Park in 2006, said: “Our plan is to develop a site next to the existing West Cornwall Shopping Park, reinforcing Hayle as one of Cornwall’s leading shopping destinations. It will bring Debenhams and other leading UK retailers to the town.

“This is a major investment that will generate around 450 retail jobs for local people.

“We think it is important that developers listen to what local people think. We find that listening to local people at an early stage and working in partnership with the community improves the quality of our proposals for all. That is why we are asking local people about their views now and we hope people will come along to the exhibition next week.”

Rob Hadfield from Debenhams added: “We are delighted to be part of this exciting project at Hayle. This is the right development in the right location, which gives us the confidence to expand our offer in Cornwall with a store that can accommodate our full range of home and fashion products.”

The impact of another large out of town development on exisiting jobs and businesses in Hayle was not detailed.

Cranford’s aim is to submit a planning application by the end of the year. If approved, they would hope to start work in Summer 2014 with the retail stores set to open in Autumn 2015.
