Crashes across Cornwall are causing major problems this evening as hail on the roads freezes.

This has effectively created sheet ice and resulted in treacherous conditions across the Duchy, with four crashes on the A30 alone, one of them involving multiple vehicles.

Newquay Police are also reporting five separate collisions in the town and surrounding area and have begged drivers to slow down.

The Newquay Police Response wrote on Twitter: "Please, please, please all slow down in your vehicles. Hail is freezing on the roads.

We are currently responding to five separate collisions in the Newquay area alone.

"Go steady, get there dreckly."

There has been a multi-vehicle crash on the A30 westbound at Treswithian near Camborne, where heavy traffic is reported.

The road has now re-opened on the eastbound side, however westbound carriageway remains closed under the bridge to allow for the recovery of vehicles.

It is affecting traffic between Redruth and Hayle, with a diversion in place via the entry and exit slip road.

The second of four A30 crashes is at Victoria, where one lane is closed and there is slow traffic due to a crash heading westbound between the junction with the B3274 at Victoria and the A39 at Indian Queens, Fraddon.

The outside lane has been closed as a car has crashed in to the central reservation.

Traffic reports state: "There has been a hail storm between Bodmin and Camborne and police are dealing with a number of accidents along the A30."

This is a separate crash to one that has taken place further along the same stretch of road, also on the westbound side and near to Fraddon Services.

One lane is closed and there is queueing traffic, with congestion as far as the A39 Indian Queens junction.

Finally, there is slow traffic and the road is partially blocked on the A30 at Bolventor, due to multi-vehicle accident between Codda - the Bolventor / Jamaica Inn area - and the A38 Launceston Road junction for Callywith and Bodmin.

A large hailstorm has caused three separate accidents and one vehicle has gone off the road westbound, while another vehicle has done the same on the eastbound side.

There are further reports of a vehicle on its side, however this is yet to be confirmed.
