HAYLE FILM CLUB:

Carol  Showing on April 21 at 7.30pm

Carol is a glittering showcase for perfect performances from Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, which have been compared to Katharine and Audrey Hepburn. Blanchett is mesmerising as Carol, a well-heeled married woman who falls for Mara's gamine shopgirl Therese. But as their relationship blooms, we see vulnerability in Carol, who could lose her daughter, and steeliness in Therese, who is determined to be a photographer. In the background is Carol's husband, superbly played by Kyle Chandler, hiring detectives to tail them. The screenplay (adapted from a novel by Patricia Highsmith, author of Strangers on a Train) and the perfect sets and costumes create a completely believable, beautiful, but regimented world in which this romance is just not meant to happen. (118 mins, rated 15.)

As ever, at the Passmore Edwards Institute, house lights down at 7.30pm. Tickets at £5/£4 for members, reserve on 01736 752319, or book online at www.haylefilmclub.org.uk
